There is so much to do, see and experience in Gainesville Florida, it’s hard to know where to begin. Rich cultural offerings, fantastic freshwater fishing, and must-see museums are just a few reasons to stay at a Gainesville FL bed and breakfast for a weekend or a week.

You've never seen anything like it...

The Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville is the largest of its kind in the state. Perhaps one of the most impressive features of the museum is the Butterfly Rainforest: four stories of lush tropical gardens, cascading waterfalls, and hundreds of butterflies make this a magical place, indeed.

There are ample opportunities to get out in nature in and around Gainesville. Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park and Longleaf Flatwoods Reserve are just south of town. There are miles of hiking, biking and riding trails, including the Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail – 16 miles of paved trail running through Gainesville, the Paynes Prairie, and Lochloosa Wildlife Management Area.

Imagine yourself floating downriver in a canoe or kayak. Near Gainesville are the Santa Fe, Ichetucknee and Suwannee Rivers, where recreation abounds. Swim, float or fish in these waters. Look for Poe Springs, which pours millions of gallons of fresh water into the Santa Fe River as it makes it way to the Gulf of Mexico.

Be sure to stroll through the historic district of Gainesville, poke around in shops, and enjoy some of the excellent restaurants while in town. There are many excellent bed and breakfasts Gainesville FL. Select one where you will feel quite at home, and take your time exploring this rich area of Northeast Florida.

Benson Days

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Mark your calendars now for the 37th Annual Benson Days, April 21 – 25, 2010. This is the premier gyroplane gathering in the east, and promises to be a lot of fun. You’ll want to book a room at a Wauchula bed and breakfast now!

Gyroplanes are out of this world!

Gyroplanes are out of this world!

If you don’t know what a gyroplane is, the best way to describe it is with a photo, like the one on the right. It’s a cross between a plane and a helicopter, using rotorblades that spin to fly and a propeller for forward motion. They are inexpensive to buy and build, extremely maneuverable, and a lot of fun for experienced pilots.

Benson Days takes place at the Wauchula Municipal airport. It’s a pretty casual event, so come early and stay late. If you can tear yourself away from the gyroplanes, you’ll find there is lots to do in and around Wauchula: visit Solomon’s Castle, or the impressive Valley of the Bones.

You may even want to take a gyroplane tour of the region, staying at several Central West Florida bed and breakfasts as you go. We are about 70 miles from St. Petersburg and Tampa – maybe less as the gyroplane flies. And there are innumerable charming towns up and down the Central West Coast, from Cedar Key to Venice.

FSU Flying High Circus

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

When folks think of traveling to Northwest Florida, they think of long stretches of sparsely populated beaches. They think of fishing villages and quaint historic towns. It is probably safe to say that most travelers to Northwest Florida are not thinking about the circus.

But they should.

Florida State University in Tallahassee boasts one of only two collegiate circuses in the United States. This unique tradition began in 1947, and has been going strong ever since. FSU students may participate in the Circus year-round, as part of their collegiate experience. It is a tremendous opportunity for them, and a great experience for those folks fortunate enough to witness it. In short, the FSU Flying High Circus rivals professional circuses.

A thrilling addition to your Tallahassee vacation.
