The Mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs

Monday, February 28th, 2011

About an hour south of Inglis Florida Bed and Breakfasts and forty minutes north of Tarpon Springs FL Bed and Breakfasts is a curious place known as Weeki Wachee Springs.

An early performance by Frances Dwight at Weeki Wachee Springs

Mermaids swim in the waters of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, one of the first roadside attractions in the state of Florida, and certainly one of the most unique. The first mermaid show was in 1947; Weeki Wachee Springs was purchased by ABC in 1959, and by the early 1960s, “mermaids” came from all over the world to work at Weeki Wachee.

Guests of Central West Florida Bed and Breakfasts will find Weeki Wachee Springs State Park to be well worth a visit. It is more than just a roadside attraction – it is part of Florida history.

If you should tire of relaxing on the beach, boating, and playing in the surf during your next Melbourne Beach Florida Bed and Breakfast Vacation, consider a trip to the Historic Rossetter House Museum and Gardens.

The museum and gardens include the James Wadsworth Rossetter House (built in 1908), the William P. Roesch House (1901), and the 1865 Houston Family Memorial Cemetery. The homes have been restored to their original condition, and provide an interesting glimpse into how successful families lived in the early 1900s. (more…)

Barred Owl.

The Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is one of many delightful spots tucked away in SW Florida. It is open daily (weather permitting) from dawn until dusk. Corkscrew is just over an hour southeast of Cape Coral FL Bed and Breakfasts, and an hour northeast of Naples.

The best way to visit the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is on foot. A boardwalk meanders more than two miles through marsh, cypress forest, wet prairie, and pine upland. Interpretive signs relate the various qualities of these four distinct environments, and volunteer naturalists wander the boardwalk, answering questions. It is best to allow two to three hours to walk the boardwalk, as there is much to see. (more…)
