October is a Festive Month in NW Florida

Fresh Oysters

Eat oysters at the Franklin County Oyster Festival in October.

October in Northwest Florida is glorious. Average temperatures are in the 70s, and there are more sunny days than at any other time during the year. If the air can be crisp in Florida, it is most likely to be crisp in October when humidity levels are at their lowest. In short, if you’ve been thinking about visiting Florida, go in October. We hope you’ll stay in NW Florida Bed and Breakfasts while there.

The 2011 October calendar is full of festivals and fun events:

  • Peanut Festival, October 1 & 2, Gabbert Farm, about an hour north of Pensacola.

Guests of Northwest Florida Bed and Breakfasts in October will feast on stone crabs, oysters and peanuts. They’ll drink Florida wine, and beer from all over the world. They’ll celebrate nature and art. When not participating in these fine festivals, they’ll go for long beach walks and swim in the Gulf of Mexico.

All in all, October in Florida’s Forgotten Coast is worth remembering.

Gainesville and the University of Florida

University of Florida Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Gainesville

Come cheer the Gators this fall.

The University of Florida is the oldest university in the state, and one of the largest in the country. Gainesville fought to get the university back at the turn of the 20 century, and their relationship has flourished ever since. Gainesville supports UF, and UF brings new people and new ideas to the community.

People are always coming and going around the university. New students arrive in August and depart in the spring. Sports teams and sports fans come to the home of the Gators to compete and cheer. People pour into the city to hear concerts and see dance performances. Sometimes, the creativity and enthusiasm is palpable. (more…)

Cedar Key, a Cool Small Town

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

Cedar Key recently made Budget Travel’s 2011 list of Coolest Small Towns in America. Budget Travel asked its readers to nominate the most interesting towns they knew, and editorial teams took it from there. Cedar Key, Florida was number 8 on the list – a respectable showing for a town of 896 people.

Enjoy a bowl of Tony's clam chowder - a world champion.

One of the reasons Cedar Key caught the attention of the general public is because of Tony’s Seafood Restaurant. Its New England clam chowder has taken first prize at the Newport, Rhode Island Great Chowder Cook-Off for the past three years. While this is undoubtedly a big blow to the egos of chefs across New England, it is cause for celebration in Cedar Key.

Guests of St. Petersburg, Florida Bed and Breakfasts rarely have trouble filling the days. Still, it’s worth adding yet another activity to the itinerary. Take a drive up the coast to Cedar Key for a bowl of clam chowder. Walk around a town that many say feels the way Key West felt three decades ago.

You may find yourself so charmed by the area that you look for a Florida Bed and Breakfast in Cedar Key. The island is close to the Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve and the Waccasassa Bay Preserve State Park, two stellar locations to explore by kayak. Work up an appetite, then head to Tony’s for chowder. You are sure to become a fan of this cool, small town.

Watch Them Run

Folks who find speed thrilling may want to check out the Melbourne Greyhound Park. Located approximately 10 miles from cozy Melbourne Beach Florida Bed and Breakfasts, the Greyhound Park offers racing several times a day, twelve months a year. When you want to spice up a relaxing beach vacation, consider spending a day at the track.

The racing calendar features Thoroughbred Horse and Harness Racing April through December. January through March, the tracks are for greyhounds. See the Racing Calendar for more information.

Dog racing - motion blurred

Greyhound racing takes place January through March at Melbourne Park.

Jai Alai is also played here. A Basque sport akin to racket ball, Jai Alai is a fast-paced game that inspires betting. Even when no bets are placed, it’s fun to watch.

Melbourne Greyhound is also home to Grouchos Comedy Club. Some of the funniest comedians in the country stand up at 8:30 p.m., every Saturday night.

A Florida Bed and Breakfast vacation conjures images of romance and gourmet food. It’s easy to imagine sharing a bottle of wine with the person you love while admiring the setting sun, and it’s easy to picture romping in the waves and lounging on the sand. For many, this is more than enough – it’s perfect. Yet some folks need to spice things up a bit, and a day at Melbourne Greyhound Park may be just the thing.
