Pattie Detwiler Talking to Aspiring Innkeeper at the Florida Bed and Breakfast Inns 2014 Conference

Pattie Detwiler Talking to Aspiring Innkeeper at the Florida Bed and Breakfast Inns 2014 Conference

As many of you know, I was an innkeeper for 12 years and enjoyed every minutes of it. I can’t tell you how many times guest would visit and say they always wanted a Bed and Breakfast or when I retire I want to buy a B & B?  I’ve heard countless innkeepers from all over say that their guests express the same sentiment. The majority of innkeepers are great people who love to serve and truly enjoy what they do everyday.

When I visit a new B & B I really like the décor of, I usually reflect on how much fun that must have been to create something new and fun that other people would enjoy. I ask aspiring innkeepers all the time to make sure they want to be innkeepers and not just decorators, even though both are lots of fun.

If you are interested in becoming an innkeeper and learning more from the professionals, the Florida Bed and Breakfast Inns and Bed and Breakfast Consultant Service is sponsoring an Aspiring Innkeeper Workshop in West Palm Beach, Florida on July 17 – 19, 2015. You’ll be staying at a luxury Bed and Breakfast and all accommodations and meals are included. Read More

Father’s Day 2015 Gift Certificate

What to do for Father’s Day? It’s not too soon to think about what you are going to give your Father for Father’s Day. In this day and age, I think it’s safe to say that giving a tie is too traditional and we should step up our game and become creative. What does your Dad like to do? What are some of his hobbies? Would a family trip together be a great way to spend quality time? Who doesn’t love to come to the sunshine State? Florida has just about anything a Dad could want to do from fishing, boating, relaxing and drinking tropical juices to a nice cold beer. Think about what would be fun and present a Florida Bed and Breakfast Inn Gift Certificate for a great gift on Father’s Day Sunday, June 21, 2015.

Monticello Home & Heritage Tour

Saturday, March 14, 2015

10:00 am – 4:30 pm

The residents of Jefferson County are extremely proud of their historic heritage. Over 20 stately homes and public buildings, beautiful trees and lovely gardens paint an elegant portrait of the Old South. This is a wonderful opportunity to see an historic town and stay at the John Denham House Bed and Breakfast, an authentic elegant, historic restoration. Listed on the National Historic Register, this thirteen room 145 year old early Victorian Mansion was built by a cotton trader who shipped cotton and goods to New York and back. It has eight fireplaces, an acre of restored grounds and a cupola on top.

Monticello Florida Bed and Breakfasts Inns are located in North West Florida.  Monticello is just 23 miles east of Florida’s capital city of Tallahassee, and is fast becoming one of that city’s favorite “bedroom communities”.   Monticello is approximately mid-way between Jacksonville, Florida’s northern-most Atlantic port and Pensacola, one of her largest Gulf ports.

Historically, the City of Monticello has no equal in Northern Florida. Nestled within the tree lined streets of Monticello are many antebellum homes which provide a unique look and feel to the city. During the depression of the 1930s, many of the residents of Monticello could not afford to build new homes and the houses were renovated or restored. Today, these homes offer tourists a rare glimpse of the original architectural styles, which prevailed in the south prior to the civil war.

Winter Bed and Breakfast Inns in Florida

Thursday, January 22nd, 2015

dolphinJump2Now that the holidays are over and the extended family has returned to their own abodes, it’s time to relax and enjoy the winter season that is Florida and it’s beautiful weather. With an abundance of activities to choose from and countless gracious Florida Bed and Breakfast Inns to choose from around the state that offer hospitality and concierge service to their guests, it’s time for someone to take care of you.

Now that I live in Florida and my favorite time of year here is from November to May when the weather is the perfect temperature for having fun outdoors. You can go to the beach, fish, water ski, drink margaritas, sleep in a hammock, or any other type of outdoor activity you can imagine. There are plenty of music festivals, loads of art festivals or fairs, and it’s the perfect time to canoe, kayak, jet-ski or ride an air boat. Who doesn’t like the feel of a nice breeze on your face while traversing on a body of water with your favorite means of transportation? If you have never experienced an airboat ride, you’re really missing out, it’s exhilarating. Take the time to explore the history and cultural of an area and feast on delicious southern cuisine. As I write this I am sitting on my balcony watching the blue herons play across the water, a lady kayaking, a couple canoeing and teenagers waiting to see who gets to ride the jet ski next, along with neighbors playing on the golf course across the lake. Doesn’t that sound wonderful?

The Florida Bed and Breakfast Inns are located throughout Florida from the beaches to the lakes, from the panhandle to the keys, there is a beautiful guest room waiting just for you. When you stay at a Florida Inn it’s like having your own personal concierge to help you navigate activities you want to pursue.

Take Those Vacation Days at Florida Inns

Thursday, November 13th, 2014

AlanHowardCanoe_1 (1)The TV commercials are full of advertisements asking you to take vacation days. Too many people are not taking advantage of their vacation days. You earned them! Here is my personal invitation to explore and enjoy Florida this winter. I’m not talking about Disney, but experiencing the real Florida. Central Florida offers citrus and cattle, beautiful rivers, woods to explore, fossil hunting, rodeos and delicious food in off the beaten path locations. See a different culture and the cowboys of old who work the cattle and those who grow produce for the world. Smell the orange blossoms in March, there is nothing like it. They seem to bloom unexpectedly overnight and the fragrance is intoxicating. Of course the beaches are always a good idea to think, dream and regenerate for a time. But do get up and enjoy what else there is to do.

Here is Cara’s Story:
I nominate my dear friend Cara Rodden. At age 32 she was diagnosed with breast cancer, already a diabetic and had many complications from diabetes. She was going partially blind and then suffered this devastating blow. It ruined her self esteem and confidence in life. We all stood behind her and supported her through her chemo and surgery. At 34 she had a double mastectomy, shortly after her wedding. She wanted to give up but she fought, every year we get together for the breast cancer walk. When she underwent surgery and couldn’t make it I walked for her with my kids. She is cancer free and every year is a huge milestone that she remains cancer free. Cara is officially disabled but volunteers part time with elementary school kids because it brings her such joy since she cannot have kids of her own. Recently she has feeling not well and very down. Her husband works to support them and her medical visits still. I wish nothing more than her and her husband to be able to have a wonderful relaxing time away from it all. To give back to such a strong amazing woman!

StreetPaintingLakeworth copyStreet Painting Festival Lake Worth, FL on February 22 & 23, 2014 from 10:00  am – 7:00 pm

Downtown Lake Worth and the Central Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce invite you to the annual Street Painting Festival, which claims bragging rights as the world’s largest. The 2-day event transforms the downtown streets with more than 200 street paintings covering more area than any other festival of its kind in the world. Hundreds of artists converge to display their diverse talents on the asphalt – using only chalk – in styles that range from Renaissance classicism to Cubism and Pop Art. Street performers, strolling minstrels and Main Stage musical entertainment add to the creative atmosphere. And of course, don’t miss the Festival Food Courts, accommodating culinary tastes and thirsts as diverse as the surrounding artwork.

Artists are encouraged to follow a “Movie Theme” such as a scene or character from their favorite film.  Over 400 Artists use the pavement as canvas to transform downtown Lake Worth into a temporary outdoor museum of original art and masterpiece reproductions. See the streets come alive as the artists transform the pavement into works of art. It happens every February in downtown Lake Worth, Florida.

The tradition of Street Painting can traced back to16th century Italy when itinerant artists would use their chalks to transform pavement into a makeshift canvas, street painting has retained its appeal through the centuries. As in ages past, crowds still gather to watch as fine works of art emerge. The “paintings” last only until the next rain, but the lively spirit and accessibility of the exhibition captivates new audiences each year and inspires lasting memories.

Florida Bed and Breakfast Inns has several Inns located in Palm Beach County, and two specifically in Downtown Lake Worth, The Sabal Palm House and the Mango Inn.  Both are a very short walk to all the activities and offer wonderful accommodations.
