Quincy has been known for decades as “the Coca-Cola town” due to it’s early financing of the Coca-Cola Company by numerous townspeople. Quincy is located about 16 miles northwest of Tallahassee. What could be a bedroom community is in fact a charming historic town with a vibrant downtown. Picturesque historic buildings line the streets, housing restaurants, shops, and Quincy Florida Bed and Breakfasts.
Use a Quincy Florida Bed and Breakfasts as a base from which to explore this part of Northwest Florida. Visit the Pebble Hill Plantation, an early 19th century plantation that became a museum in 1983. Walk through the Natural Bridge Battlefield State Historic Site, where Confederate soldiers prevented Union troops from taking Tallahassee. Take a tour of the Old Capitol in Tallahassee, constructed in 1845 and used through 1978. Exhibits include political history of the state of Florida and the history of the building.
Nearby Lake Talquin State Forest offers boating, hiking, and fishing. The St. Marks Historic Railroad Trail runs 16 miles from the Apalachicola National Forest to the Gulf of Mexico and is favored by cyclists. The Maclay State Gardens feature nature trails, bike paths, fishing and boating, but it is the delightfully designed floral gardens surrounding a 1930s mansion that inspire most visitors.
St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge is a mere hour from Quincy, on the Gulf of Mexico. Birders will delight in the hundreds of species of birds who make the refuge their home, such as peregrine falcons and black-necked stilts. Also at the refuge is the historic St. Marks Lighthouse, built in 1832. While not open to the public, it is a favorite with photographers, for it stands tall alongside saltwater estuaries.
