Homestead is located about 35 miles southwest of Miami, and is in the middle of a unique agricultural area called the Redland. The Everglades begins just west of the city. Key Largo is 25 miles south on U.S. Highway 1. It is home to about 30,000 people.

The name came about when the Florida East Coast Railway was being extended from Miami to Key West. The railroad passed through the area around the Redlands that had recently been opened up for homesteading.

Since the construction camp at the end of the railroad had no real name, materials were delivered to “Homestead Country”. That got shortened to Homestead, and the name stuck.

Why the N.B.A. Is Planning on Going to Disney World https://florida-inns.com/why-the-n-b-a-is-planning-on-going-to-disney-world/ Fri, 29 May 2020 01:57:00 +0000 https://flssl.com/why-the-n-b-a-is-planning-on-going-to-disney-world/

Singing pirates and spinning teacups. Mickey Mouse-shaped waffles. Impossibly chipper employees chirping, “Have a magical day.” Stroller gridlock.

Pre-eminent sports venue?

Walt Disney World is known for many things, but few people would immediately associate it with athletics, unless you count endurance walking or Super Bowl winners gleefully exclaiming their intention to visit, a marketing gimmick that started in 1987. Tucked behind oak trees and sabal palms on the southern edge of the Florida mega-resort, however, is ESPN Wide World of Sports, a 220-acre basketball, soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, baseball and competitive cheer complex that serves as an overlooked Disney World engine — and is expected to soon become the capital of the basketball universe.

St Petersburg · Clearwater Area Florida Hotels, Lodging and Bed and Breakfasts https://florida-inns.com/st-petersburg-%c2%b7-clearwater-area-florida-hotels-lodging-and-bed-and-breakfasts/ Thu, 23 Jan 2020 17:51:28 +0000 https://flssl.com/?p=616

Florida’s Beach, as one imagines it, awaits on the Gulf of Mexico as St. Petersburg/Clearwater – Florida’s Beach. Thirty-five miles of Gulf of Mexico beaches sparkle in the unique setting that also features the resort communities of St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, Madeira Beach, Indian Rocks Beach, Dunedin, Safety Harbor and Tarpon Springs. Florida’s Beach is everything Florida, and a whole lot more. Reinforcing the beauty of area beaches “Dr. Beach,” Florida International University professor Dr. Stephen Leatherman, rates three area beaches among the nation’s finest. In his most recent survey, Fort De Soto Park is ranked as having the best beach in the United States, followed by Caladesi Island at #4. Clearwater Beach rated as the #1 city beach in the Gulf Region.

The Salvador Dali Museum contains the world’s most extensive collection devoted exclusively to this famous Spanish master. The Museum of Fine Arts is noted for its display of French impressionist paintings and other collections. There is also the St. Petersburg Museum of History, while Heritage Village in Largo offers historical exhibits, and a self-guided tour among the restored homes and buildings provides an insight into the lifestyle of Florida’s pioneers. The Florida International Museum, an affiliate of the Smithsonian, brings world-class, Smithsonian exhibitions to St. Petersburg on a regular basis. FIM augments its collection with rotating exhibits from various lenders including the Smithsonian Institution, Mr. Cecil Stoughton, former White House Photographer and Mr. Robert Davidoff, Palm Beach Photographer. Past lenders for other exhibitions have included the Moscow Kremlin Museums, Greek Ministry of Culture, Fondazione Memmo, Rome and the National Institute of Peru. In the north end of Florida’s Beach, visitors will find Tarpon Springs — one of Florida’s most unique communities. It became America’s sponge capital when Greek sponge divers settled there in the early 1900s, and sponge boats still operate from its scenic docks. A visit to Tarpon Springs transports one to a small fishing village in Greece and the Greek heritage is maintained with religious, music and food festivals during the year.

Many properties in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area have turned to the Superior Small Lodging program in conjunction with the area’s Convention & Visitors Bureau for a new way to brand their properties. The St. Petersburg/Clearwater CVB this month released its 2004 Superior Small Lodging brochure and updated its Web site highlighting these unique properties. And in St. Petersburg, a group of Bed & Breakfast properties has joined together as the St. Petersburg Area Association of Bed and Breakfast Inns (SPAABBI) and teamed with an airline partner to market their properties.

Fort Myers Area Florida Hotels, Lodging and Bed and Breakfasts https://florida-inns.com/fort-myers-area-florida-hotels-lodging-and-bed-and-breakfasts/ Thu, 23 Jan 2020 17:45:21 +0000 https://flssl.com/?p=612

Welcome to a tropical island getaway on southwest Florida’s gulf. We invite you to enjoy an atmosphere that’s a little quieter, a little less hurried and a lot less like the rest of the world. A place of exotic tropical wildlife, pristine white sand beaches and hundreds of uninhabited islands. The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel include Sanibel & Captiva Island, Fort Myers Beach, Fort Myers, Bonita Springs & Estero, Cape Coral, Pine Island, Boca Grande & Outer Islands, North Fort Myers and Lehigh Acres.

Given the area’s wealth of natural resources, it’s no surprise that the Fort Myers/Sanibel area in southwest Florida is also rich in history. An abundance of intriguing attractions and museums throughout the county will satisfy visitors seeking a different perspective on our nation’s heritage. The Calusa Indians were the first to discover the charms of the Fort Myers/Sanibel area as long ago as 5,000 B.C. By the turn of the 20th century, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and other prominent Americans who spent their winters here, helped put the area on the modern-day map. Bird watching has become one of the most popular American pastimes, and nowhere can it be enjoyed more fully than on The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel. In fact, such a variety of birdlife thrives here, that it easily can be considered an ornithologist’s Mecca. Southwest Florida boasts more than one million acres of nature sanctuaries, most of which have paths or boardwalks that allow visitors to easily explore and enjoy. These refuges boast unspoiled wetlands where everyone can experience the beauty of the state in its virgin condition and an abundance of wildlife thriving in its native setting.

More than 100 barrier and coastal islands snuggle up to the Lee County, Florida shoreline, home to 50 miles of sandy white beaches that shelter some of the best shelling in the United States. Tourists and residents alike search the beaches for Neptune’s treasures. Some don miner’s hats with lights, arising before sunrise to find the best specimens washed ashore. While some visitors of southwest Florida never leave its sun-kissed shores and challenging golf courses, there are plenty of attractions and activities to keep everyone busy. Singles, couples and families find new places to explore and new things to do each time they visit.

Turquoise waters, sapphire skies, platinum sands, emerald palms. Immerse yourself in Greater Fort Lauderdale, with 23 miles of palm-fringed Florida shoreline from Dania Beach / Hollywood in the south to Pompano Beach / Deerfield Beach in the north. Culture, nature, shopping, dining and nightlife — you’ll find it all in Greater Fort Lauderdale.

Water is a defining element of Greater Fort Lauderdale, framed on the east by the majestic Atlantic, and bordered on the west by the exotic Everglades, a one-of-a-kind ecosystem teeming with spectacular flora and fauna and home to the Seminole Indians. Between the two, the Intracoastal Waterway and a canal system reminiscent of Venice winds gently through the interior, connecting world-class boutiques, galleries and restaurants with museums, theaters and nightspots.
Festivals and fairs, sporting events and parades, on land and on water and in the air — there’s always something fun to do in Greater Fort Lauderdale. Florida Keys and Key West Florida Hotels, Lodging and Bed and Breakfasts https://florida-inns.com/florida-keys-and-key-west-florida-hotels-lodging-and-bed-and-breakfasts/ Thu, 23 Jan 2020 17:31:25 +0000 https://flssl.com/?p=604

A getaway to the Florida Keys and Key West is much more than peace and quiet. It’s also more than its legendary fishing and deep sea diving. The region is about Art. Theatre. Museums. Shopping. Fine Dining. Entertainment and Festivals. Key Largo is the Diving Capital of the World. From John Pennekamp State Park and the National Marine Sanctuary, to crystal clear waters of Molasses Reef, to the underwater caves of the French Reef and the divable wreck of the U.S.S. Spiegel Grove, Key Largo offers great fishing too. While onshore, visit the Harry Harris Park or Dolphins Plus not to mention historic Tavernier for a fuller experience of Key Largo.

Travel to Islamorada and enter The Sport Fishing Capital of the World. Whether on the ocean or on dry land – at the Theatre of the Sea, on Windley Key – Islamorada is surrounded by two oceans full of the world’s most sought-after game fish. Make sure to kick back at Long Key State Park or drop by Lignumvitae Botanical Site for a spectacular Islamorada experience.

You can fly into Marathon’s airport and land right in the Heart of the Keys. Archeological digs at Crane Point Hammock, treasures at the Museum of Natural History, scientific break-thrus at The Dolphin Research Center all make Marathon the Must-Visit Florida Key. And while much of the Henry Flagler’s railroad to Key West was destroyed in years past, when you travel along the historic Seven Mile Bridge, you’re driving where Henry Flagler’s mighty locomotives once roared. Make sure to visit The Great Heron National Wildlife Refuge, The Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary and The Key Deer National Wildlife Refuge as you make your way to Key West. John Audubon and Ernest Hemingway lived here. You’ve now arrived at Key West. An island city of palm-lined streets boasting of Victorian homes, gingerbread conch houses and mansions on the National Register, Key West holds a passion for preservation and a great zest for living. The moment you arrive on Duval Street, you become a part of the personality of the Keys. Beaches. Charter boats. Glorious Sunsets. Historic Forts. Lighthouses. Theatres. Museums and Galleries. Festivals and Markets. Sidewalk cafes and Legendary pubs. Even Truman’s Little Whitehouse. These all make Key West one of the most unique and complete destinations to visit.
