IRC Photographer Spotlight Series – Sarah Seavey

1. How long have you lived or have been visiting Indian River County?

I moved to Indian river county in October of 2017.

2. What do you love the most about experiencing our county?

I love the juxtaposition between the beach and the country. We have beautiful beaches just a few miles away from open farm country. It’s a good mix of my two favorite things.

My favorite place to shoot is probably at the barn “Painted Sky Stables”. Its’ so open you can see miles of sky. At  sunset you can see so many gradients of color.

5. How long have you been a photographer?  

I started taking pictures about ten years ago at about the same time Instagram became popular. I loved being able to play with filters to make something nice out of a “phone” picture.

6. Are you self taught or did you go to school to become a photographer?  

I have taken some classes but I am mostly self taught. A friend bought me my first “real” camera. I learned how to use it through books, trial and error, and of course YouTube.

7. What motivated you to get behind the lens?    

My motivation behind the lens is basically to show others the way I see the world. I love to take trail rides or walks in secluded areas. The only downside being that I can’t share the beauty I encounter with anyone else. I started taking pictures and sharing them. I had to learn how to edit the images to make them more as I had seen it. What I remembered did not always translate to what I had captured. I started learning how to use light, different lens filters, and exposures to get the picture as I saw it in my head.

8. What is your favorite area to photograph that is off the beaten path? 

I don’t have as much time to travel far from the beaten path these days. I do like to take a nice walk on my horse in the field and enjoy the “openness” of the sky. It’s also a favorite spot to catch sunset. The beach also makes for a good landscape.

9. Is this a hobby/passion or your business?  

Photography is and probably always will be a hobby. I like that spontaneity of it all with no pressure to HAVE to catch an image or feel pressure to post everyday. It acts as a reminder to always look around at the beauty of the world.

10. What can our followers and readers expect from you in the future in terms of creative expression?

A lot more sunsets from between my horse’s ears and lots of beach pictures. I love how the light changes around the water and I’m still learning how to beat capture it. I also want to take some good storm pictures. I’ve been lucky to be in the right place at the right time but I would love to scout out a location and be lucky enough to capture the beauty of a storm with proper equipment.
