But the idea of historic preservation deserves attention all year long, which is why we have launched the new Martin County Historic Preservation Trail. Residents and visitors alike can sign up to receive the free digital trail here and learn more about the one-of-a-kind attractions sprinkled throughout our vibrant community.

Participants are encouraged to follow the trail to witness all of the public sites that have been recognized with local or national historic designation throughout Martin County. Highlights include the iconic House of Refuge at Gilbert’s Bar (the oldest structure in Martin County); the Mansion at Tuckahoe (which once served as the home of Coca-Cola heiress Anne Bates Leach); and Trapper Nelson’s Interpretive Site (nestled in the wilds of Jonathan Dickinson State Park).

To celebrate the new mobile-exclusive program, we have also organized a scavenger hunt of sorts! We have hidden a collection of limited edition coins at each of the sites outlined along the trail. Simply visit each featured destination and keep your eyes peeled for the hidden treasure—find a coin and it’s yours to keep! In total, there are 50 coins waiting to be claimed.

Will you be one of the lucky ones? There’s only one way to find out! Sign up to receive the free trail today and start exploring these hidden gems located right in our backyard. And if you do happen to find one, be sure to share a photo on social media using the #LoveMCHistory hashtag to spread the word!
